Quick push notifications

Quickly create and send a push notification to a predefined audience across all your platforms with Swrve quick push notifications.

For example, use quick push for breaking news-type notifications or new content updates. Some common use cases are:

  • Breaking news
  • Weather alerts
  • Sport results
  • Political updates
  • New betting odds
  • New blog posts
  • Latest editions published (for example, magazines)
  • New songs, videos, or photos uploaded
  • Travel alerts

There are two main parts to sending a quick push notification:

  1. Predefine the audience(s) to whom you want to send quick push notifications.
  2. Create and send the notifications, as needed.

Create a quick push audience

Before you create a quick push notification, you must define the audience. Even if you want to send a notification to all users, you must define an audience that includes all users (for example, users who have used the app at least once). After the audience is defined, it is available to use for any quick push campaign.

To create a predefined audience for quick push notifications:

Step 1: On the Manage menu, select Quick push audiences.

Step 2: On the Quick Push Audiences screen, select Create Audience.

Step 3: In the Name box, enter the name of the quick push audience.

Step 4: Depending on your comfort level with AND/OR logic, select the mode (Simple or Advanced) and primary operator you want to use to filter your audience. For more information about Simple and Advanced mode, see Segment and audience filters.

Step 5: Use the audience filter tool to create an audience based on the available data types, operator and values provided. For detailed information on the data types and filter descriptions, see Segment and audience filters.

  1. Select the data type of the filter you want to add.
  2. Create the filter using the filter type, operator, and value controls provided.
  3. Select Add to save your filter.
  4. To define additional filters for the audience, select Add Filter and repeat the previous three actions.

Step 6: After you have defined the filters for your quick push audience, select Create Quick Push Audience to save the audience definitions.

The new audience is displayed on the Quick Push Audiences screen. The status in the Updated column initially shows as Processing, as the system gathers all users that match the audience definitions. The Number of Users column displays the number of users in that audience, and the audience is updated regularly as user behaviors change.

The audience is available to use in your quick push campaigns after approximately one hour.


Create a quick push notification

To create a quick push notification:

Step 1: On the Campaigns screen, select Create campaign.

Step 2: On the Choose your marketing channel screen, select Push as your campaign channel, Quick push as the Notification type, and then select Continue.

Step 3: On the quick push notification campaign screen, select your target audience for the quick push from the Audience list.

Step 4: In the Notification Name box, enter a name for the quick push notification.

Step 5: Enter the basic notification content:

  • Title (optional) – the notification title
  • Subtitle (optional) – the notification subtitle
  • Body – the notification text

When you click in a text box, the Insert Property   and emoji  icons appear and enable you to include custom user properties or emojis in your message text. For more information, see Personalizing push notifications and How do I include emojis in my campaigns?

Step 6:  If you want to include rich media in your message, such as an image or link to a video, in the Media section, select the type of media, and then either upload the file or enter the URL of the file you want to use. For more information on the media options available, see About rich push notifications.

If the media you include is personalized (for example, a user’s profile photo or a daily subscription video), in the Show Media Options section, you can specify fallback media content that is used if a user does not have a value for the referenced media.

A preview of your notification appears on the right side of the screen. Select iOS or Android to view the preview on the related device in different formats (for example, lock screen, recent, banner, extended view, Apple watch). If you have a multi-platform app integration with Swrve, quick push notifications are automatically sent to all platforms. Note: The format of the delivered message depends on the device preferences and operating system of the recipient.

Step 7: In the Button & Actions section, select the action you want to occur if the user initially engages with the notification. The available actions are:

  • Open App – opens the app in the foreground.
  • Open deeplink/URL – directs the user to a particular custom location. For example, you might use a deeplink to direct the user to a specific screen in your app. Coordinate with your development team to determine the exact deeplink URL to enter.

If you want to include additional actions for your notification that are displayed in extended view, select up to three custom buttons.

To add custom buttons:

  1. Select Add Custom Buttons.
  2. Select the number of buttons you want to include (1, 2, or 3).
  3. Enter the button labels. Depending on the platform, you may be very limited in the number of characters that will display on the button.
  4. Select the desired actions. If you select URL/Deeplink, enter the required value in the field next to the action list.
  5. Select Save Buttons.

Step 8: By default, devices that don’t support rich media or are not running the Swrve SDK version 4.11+ of your app will only display the notification Title, Subtitle, and Body. If you add media or buttons to your notification, you can also include custom text that is displayed on such devices. Select Add Custom Text and then enter the alternative TitleSubtitle and Body.

Step 9: (Optional) If you want instructional parameters to be sent to your app when you send the push notification, define custom key/value pairs. For example, you might want to direct the user straight to the store (instead of the default start screen) when they open your app from the push notification. Alternatively, you might want tracking parameters to be passed from the push notification for use by your internal or external tracking systems. To add custom key/value pairs:

  1. Select Show Advanced Options.
  2. In the Custom Properties section, select Add Key/Value.
  3. Enter a key/value pair in the Key and Value fields. For example, go_to/check_intrial/30days or discount/10percent. The Payload box displays the actual code sent with your push notification.

Step 10: To send the notification to the selected audience, select Send. A confirmation message is displayed and includes the audience number that the notification will be sent to. Select Yes to confirm and send the notification.
